About 8–10% of Black Americans carry the sickle cell trait.
Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited, chronic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become abnormally shaped and rigid, which can block blood flow and deprive the body of oxygen.
In the United States, sickle cell trait affects 1–3 million people, while about 1 in 3 Black babies are born with sickle cell trait, and about 1 in 365 Black babies are born with sickle cell disease.
There’s an adaptogen that can help. *
Suma, an adaptogen often referred to as “Brazilian Ginseng,” is a versatile plant from Brazil, known for its remarkable nutritional profile. Packed with 19 amino acids, essential vitamins (A, B1, B2, B5, E, K), and minerals like iron, magnesium, and zinc, Suma has long been valued for its health benefits, particularly in supporting cellular oxygenation and treating anemia.
In a clinical study for sickle cell patients, 15 participants who took suma root (1000 mg three times daily) for three months showed significant improvements in hemoglobin levels, reduced red blood cell sickling, and an overall better physical condition compared to those on a placebo. However, once they stopped taking the supplement, their symptoms and blood markers returned to their original state within 3-6 months. Some participants who continued using Suma for three years or more maintained these benefits without side effects. Another study, conducted by American researchers in 2000, confirmed that suma root could reduce sickling and rehydrate blood cells in a lab setting.
Does suma work?
During our anecdotal testing, we gave Dev’s sister—Amber—suma to take for 6 months. By month 5, her hemoglobin was 11. It had never been higher than the 3-7 range. This 5-month period was the longest time Amber had not been in the hospital due to a sickle cell crisis and most notably, her pain management only required consuming suma and taking ibuprofen when the pre-crisis aches began to onset. No Percocet or morphine as she would normally receive to ease her physical pain.
Adaptogens help the body better cope with the demands of modern life, promoting resilience and long-term health. Suma is just one of them. If you or someone you love is living with sickle cell anemia, share this information with them.
Healing is a communal task.
